European Directive “2000/53/CE on ELV”E” concerning vehicles at the end of life has two major foci.
1. Preventive: Member States encourage:
- vehicle manufacturers, in collaboration with material and equipment manufacturers, notably, to facilitate recycling and to avoid having to dispose of hazardous waste.
- the design and manufacture of new vehicles that fully take into account and facilitate the dismantling, re-use, recovering and especially the recycling of vehicles that are no longer in use and of their components and materials.
2- The recycling objective:
- The directive sets numbered objectives to be achieved at the latest on January 1st, 2015: a minimum rate of re-use and recycling of 85% per average weight of ELV. The battery of EVs or HEVs is a factor to be considered in the calculation.
