The manufacture of batteries or their assembly creates waste.
- Production scrap: material from cutting, deburring coils.
- Sludge from water treatment plants
- Dust and filters from air treatments
- New industrial waste: manufactured products that do not meet quality criteria on leaving the production line.

SNAM's recycling processes, based on samples received in advance, enable suitable treatment to be carried out according to the waste's chemical properties.

«industrial battery or accumulator», any battery or accumulator designed for entirely industrial or professional use or used in any type of electrical vehicle; (Art. 3. 6 of Battery Directive 2006/66/EC).

Industrial batteries are mainly used to power the electrical motors of trains, hybrid and electrical vehicles, handling equipment. The main electrochemical groups present in these batteries are lead and nickel-cadmium. However, with the advent of ecological vehicles, batteries with nickel metal hydride and rechargeable lithium are increasingly used because they are more efficient for a given onboard weight.

«portable battery or accumulator», any battery, button cell, assembly as battery or accumulator that:
a) is sealed
b) can be carried by hand
c) is not an industrial battery or accumulator, or an automotive battery or accumulator; (Art. 3. 6 of Battery Directive 2006/66/EC).

Portable batteries are mainly used in mobile phones, portable computers. They are present in powered hand tools, such as cordless drills and screwdrivers.

Since 2009, thanks to its continuous development, SNAM has completed a link missing from its recycling system by starting the activity of treating alkaline and saline batteries.

This new activity means receiving, in mixed battery lots, NiCd, NiMH and Li-Ion batteries and then offering an additional recycling service for more than 90% of the waste arriving on our sites.
The number of waste shipments is thus restricted, which both limits CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and significantly reduces costs to the evident satisfaction of our Customers.
